What is a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP)?
A FNP is a registered nurse who has completed graduate level education and specializes in the care of all ages. Nurse practitioners in Illinois are mid-level providers (equivalent to physicians who work in an outpatient setting) who can serve as a patient's primary care provider. Nurse practitioners can diagnose, treat, manage, prevent and evaluate acute and chronic diseases, as well as provide valuable education to patients. Nurse Practitioners are able to prescribe medications, order labs and diagnostic testing, and make referrals. FNPs can also provide well-child exams, physicals, and well-woman exams. In all, Nurse Practitioners are direct health care providers, providing a comprehensive approach toward patient care with the attentiveness and compassion that is commonly associated with nursing.
